Our Involvement
General Motors and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) have organized the AutoDrive Challenge™ II, a prestigious intercollegiate competition that sees teams develop and demonstrate an autonomous driving vehicle to be used in urban scenarios as defined by the SAE Standard (J3016™) Level 4 automation. Wisconsin Autonomous was one of ten North American universities selected. The criteria for selection was primarily based on previous work and the availability of resources to complete the challenge (students, funding, infrastructure, etc.). General Motors will generously donate each team a Chevy Bolt EUV to be used as the physical competition test bed. As a four-year challenge, it is imperative to have strong support from the University and sponsors.
Our Progress
We are currently in Year One of the four year competition. The focus of this year will be to prepare, design, and implement software destined for testing on the physical car. This includes perception, localization and controls, where each component is thoroughly tested and scored in a variety events in May, 2022. Further, various technical and non-technical challenges are also completed in Year One; including a Concept Design Report and Presentation, Software Requirement Specification, Project Management deliverables, Innovation Challenges focused on multi-disciplinary development, among others. The primary goal of Year One is to give teams a stepping stone for which they can carry on to future years.
